Digital by Nature: The Art of Miguel Chevalier

Digital by Nature: The Art of Miguel Chevalier at Kunsthalle München presents the artist’s largest solo exhibition in Europe to date, curated by Franziska Stöhr. The exhibition surveys Miguel Chevalier’s practice from the early 1980s to the present, tracing his sustained engagement with digital technologies as both tools and subjects of artistic inquiry.

Born in 1959 in Mexico City and based in Paris, Chevalier has worked with computers as a creative medium for more than four decades. The exhibition brings together approximately 120 works that reflect the evolution of his approach, from early experiments with pixels, binary code, and algorithmic systems to recent projects that explore the intersections of digital and analog processes, technology and nature, and human interaction with computational environments.

The presentation includes a wide range of media and formats, such as 3D printed sculptures produced in ceramic and recycled plastic, robot-generated drawings, machine-produced embroidery and tapestries, and video works created using artificial intelligence. Large-scale generative and interactive installations form a central component of the exhibition. In these works, algorithmic systems continuously generate visual compositions that respond to visitors’ movements, establishing a reciprocal relationship between human presence and machine-driven processes. These installations are accompanied by sound compositions by Jacopo Baboni Schilingi, which further structure the spatial and sensory experience.

visualizing Interaction, Growth, and Transformation

Two works were developed specifically for Kunsthalle München. Complex Meshes Robot Drawings is a performative installation in which a robot produces drawings based on visual motifs from Chevalier’s interactive series Complex Meshes. The artist defines the parameters by selecting the paper and drawing tools, while the robot executes the marks. Originally designed for industrial repetition, the robotic system is reprogrammed to produce variable, gesture-like drawings that foreground the translation between programmed movement and hand-drawn expression.

The second new work, In Vitro Pixel Flowers, expands Chevalier’s ongoing exploration of digital botanical systems. The installation presents his largest virtual herbarium to date, allowing visitors to generate plant forms through an online interface and observe their development within a greenhouse-like environment. The digitally generated plants emerge, evolve, and disappear in continuous cycles, forming a shared, participatory landscape that visualizes processes of growth, variation, and renewal.

Across its diverse works, Digital by Nature positions digital technology not only as a means of production but as a framework for examining systems, transformation, and interaction. The exhibition emphasizes Chevalier’s long-term investigation into how computational tools can shape visual form, spatial experience, and collective participation within contemporary art contexts.

flowers — flora in contemporary art at culture opens soon

Spring arrives early in London as Flowers — Flora In Contemporary Art & Culture blooms at the Saatchi Gallery. Opening on 12th February, the exhibition gathers 500 unique artworks and objects, tracing the enduring influence of flowers in art, design, fashion, music, literature, and science from past to present. Across nine thematic galleries, each exploring this expression of this subject across various mediums and cultural contexts, the works range from large-scale immersive installations and original paintings to photography and archival objects.

Throughout, the exhibition celebrates the ways flora has shaped human creativity throughout history, and how they have endured as symbols, metaphors, and emotional signifiers, deeply embedded in myths, stories, and cultural traditions. Standout works include Rebecca Louise Law’s mesmerizing installation featuring 100,000 dried flowers, alongside the intervention of Miguel Chevalier who transforms an entire room into a digital garden of interactive virtual flora. Among the hundreds of participating artists, artists also include Philip Colbert, Damien Hirst, Yinka Ilori, and Takashi Murakami.

Divided into nine thematic sections further distinguished by mediums, Flowers — Flora In Contemporary Art & Culture begins with the section titled Roots. This is a historical exploration of floral depictions and their embedded symbolism from Renaissance masterpieces to the intricate compositions of the Arts & Crafts Movement and modernist reinterpretations of botanical beauty. Ahead, In Bloom highlights the continued fascination with flowers in contemporary art, showcasing works created over the past 30 years by renowned artists such as Gillian Ayres, Elizabeth Blackadder, Alex Katz, Gary Hume, and Marc Quinn alongside emerging creatives.

The third room, Flowers and Fashion, explores the perpetual appeal of flora, which has adorned and inspired clothing and accessories, from high-street trends to haute couture. Here, Buccellati’s hand-carved silverware and jewelry take center stage. Photography and sculpture take the spotlight in another section, capturing nature’s fleeting beauty in two and three dimensions.

from large scale installations to digital gardens

The fifth room is occupied entirely by La Fleur Morte, a bespoke installation created by Rebecca Louise Law. Vast and immersive, it comprises of over 100,000 dried flowers suspended in a double-height gallery, inviting visitors to wander through a suspended floral dreamscape. The exhibition extends beyond visual arts, delving into how flowers have influenced music, film, and literature. Ahead, a wall display of vinyl records reveals the recurring floral emblems that have graced album covers for the past five decades, while literature and cinema sections look at the metaphorical richness of flowers in storytelling. Visitors can also immerse in a digital floral fantasy in the seventh room, Digital Botanica, where an interactive installation by Miguel Chevalier projects virtual flowers and plants that respond to movement across 70 square meters.

Ondes de lumière by Miguel Chevalier lights up Saint-Denis

As part of the ‘1 building, 1 work’ charter, Vinci Immobilier commissioned artist Miguel Chevalier to create ‘Ondes de lumière’ for the Universeine district in Saint-Denis, the central hub of the athletes’ village for Paris 2024. This installation, part of the ‘Courants Fertiles’ artistic approach by SOLIDEO and labeled ‘Cultural Olympiad’ by Paris 2024, integrates seamlessly with the architectural design by Béal & Blanckaert, Pascal Gontier, Lina Ghotmeh, and Gaëtan Le Penhuel.

The artwork consists of eight organic-shaped resin chandelier sculptures, suspended from the ceilings of five porches in the two blocks of buildings along Allée de la Seine. Crafted from Acrylic crystal Dacryl® and recycled ALTUGLAS™ R-Life, these sculptures incorporate LED ribbons and gobo projectors, varying in size to create a dynamic visual impact.

wave phenomena inspire Chevalier’s chandelier installations

Drawing inspiration from the movements of the Seine River, the artist materializes wave phenomena in a stylized, relief-like manner. During the day, natural light interacts with the sculptures, creating a subtle interplay of transparency and translucency. At night, the sculptures illuminate, transforming into large, colorful drapes that project a succession of concentric rings onto the ground, symbolizing the propagation of light waves and interference patterns.

Each porch is thus transformed into a vibrant universe of energy, with light introducing a sensitive and welcoming atmosphere. This results in a soft and colorful ambiance that infuses the space with a sense of dream and poetry. The five successive installations provide a distinct identity and uniqueness to the group of buildings, making the sculptures visible and engaging for both residents and passersby.

digital beauty takes over ara art center in seoul

Five-armed drawing robots and interactive tapestries of light take over the Ara Art Center for Miguel Chevalier’s Digital Beauty exhibition. The French artist’s luminous first solo show in Seoul takes over the building with twelve installations, each tailored to the site’s spatial elements in various ways and each questioning our perceptions of reality and immersing us in the expanses of digital infinity. In keeping with 20th-century artistic movements like kinetic and optical art, Chevalier employs immersive, generative, and interactive virtual reality installations on a grand scale. These projections are marked by pixels, networks, flows, and algorithmic geometries, brought to life against the musical compositions of Claude Micheli for a vibrant multisensory experience.

miguel chevalier crafts a multisensory interactive experience

Miguel Chevalier’s installations illuminate five levels of the Ara Art Center. On a single floor visitors encounter the luminescent installation Complex Meshes, an interactive projection of fluorescent strings, alongside the sculpture Rhizomatic, all weaving a visual tapestry of networks. The interweaving of colored light, layered networks, and varied pathways visually manifests the imperceptible flows and networks floating around and connecting us. Elsewhere, Liquid Pixels introduces a dynamic painting of light shaped by the real-time choreographies of spectators. Here, the digital artist revisits the history of painting, drawing inspiration from the gestural paintings of the 1950s, embodying the technique of electronic dripping.

Machine Vision delves into self-portraiture and facial recognition systems. Viewers standing in front of a camera transition from the real to the virtual world, witnessing their portraits deconstructed in real-time to form abstract universes. In collaboration with Patrick Tresset, Chevalier introduces The Attractors Dance, a five-armed drawing robot. Comprising articulated arms each equipped with a pen, the entity draws five simultaneous images extracted from a perpetually remixed data bank. These synchronised movements give life to a veritable choreography in a decorative exuberance of colours and shapes.

miguel chevalier introduces first exhibition in south korea

for his first solo exhibition in south korea, miguel chevalier introduces ‘digital abysses’ in aqua planet jeju island. the display furthers chevalier’s explorations of undersea flora and fauna, showcasing a selection of mesmerizing VR installations composed of mixed-media artworks and UV light, as well as 3D printed sculptures, digital prints, and resin paintings. the artist has imagined an immersive journey between dream and reality that spans over 1,500 sqm, proposing a dive into the unknown, just like the great oceanic depths, 95% of which remain unexplored.

interactive VR installations drawing from marine life

the exhibition starts with four ‘cabinets of curiosities’, containing more than 100 small artworks (3D printed or laser-cut sculptures, digital prints, and resin paintings) inspired by marine currents, extraordinary shapes of corals, and microscopic plankton. these luminescent universes by miguel chevalier (find more here) introduce seven different VR installations, like ‘liquid pixels’ immersing visitors in an interactive liquid environment of marine currents; ‘the origin of the world’ composed of four interactive magic carpets whose algorithm is inspired by the shapes and growth of fish’s skin pigments or ‘complex meshes’, where viewers experience various disrupted colored weaving patterns and wired radiolarians.

‘trans-seaweeds’ and ‘amphibolis’ are lush virtual underwater meadows, made up of varieties of imaginary corals, sea anemones, algae, and rhizomatic plants. these organic ballets utilize algorithms creating artificial life universes, with growth, proliferation, and disappearance effects ad infinitum.

‘digital plankton’ is composed of three virtual water bubbles, where microscopic animal plankton with their various shapes and luminescent colors develop in real time. these living organisms react according to the movements of visitors as if to emphasize man’s effect on nature. ‘oscillations’ is a generative virtual-reality installation, interacting with music by michel redolfi, founder of underwater music in 1981. a spectral waveform is transformed according to the music that presents natural polyphonies of the ocean recorded by the composer around the world. these floating sound spectra generate universes of waves or imaginary landscapes that recall korean sansuhwa landscape paintings. through the theme of the abyss, the exhibition explores in a poetical and metaphorical way our relationship with visible and invisible living beings. in investigating the notion of artificial life, it raises concerns about the fragility of these ecosystems and calls out for the need to preserve biodiversity.

sober lines and pixelated patterns

imagined by artist miguel chevalier and the designers of A+A cooren studio, ‘dans un nuage de pixels’ – ‘in a cloud of pixels’ – is a furniture collection that combines art and design. blending sober lines, pixelated patterns, and fine detailing, the pieces include a selection of stylish armchairs, a sofa as well as a savonnerie rug. conceived in 2016 and finalized in 2021, the series is one of the latest artistic furniture projects manufactured by mobilier national’s manufactories and workshops.

sitting in a cloud of pixels

through this project, the creators sought to give users the opportunity to ‘sit down in a cloud of pixels’. the pattern of the rug, as well as the textile covering the furniture returns to the theme that is so dear to miguel chevalier, pioneering artist of virtual and digital art. these pixels are to him the ‘equivalent of the pictorial touch, the metaphorical image of the quantitative explosion of digital data which compels to find new ways to store the data, to see and analyze the world’. according to the french artist, the pattern also echoes the writings and the many laws drafted by the institutions of the republic where this collection of furniture shall be set.

the sober lines of the seats and table imagined by A+A cooren echo their subtle and very fine design work. according to the studio, the collection is meant to be ‘as elementary as a pixel for it to disappear in favour of the pattern’. the round and soft shapes allow for optimal comfort, while the thin legs give the feeling of being suspended in a cloud above the savonnerie.

the series invites users to sit down in a cloud of pixels

about mobilier national

the manufacturer of this collection is mobilier national, a french national service agency under the supervision of the french ministry of culture. its history goes back to the garde-meuble de la couronne, which was responsible for the administration of all furniture and objects in the royal residences. the mobilier national continues to administer state furniture but has also expanded from its historical role of conserving furniture to curating a modern collection. the french agency owns a collection of tens of thousands of furniture pieces and objects meant to furnish and decorate the official buildings of the republic in france and abroad. three hundred craftsmen operate within mobilier national in paris and throughout france.

the lighthouse in saint-tropez, france, has been transformed with a vibrant display of corals created by french artist miguel chevalier. the public artwork is called ‘coraux fractals 1’ and it marks the fourth edition of saint-tropez couleur bleu, an event initiated by agnès bouquet that merges culture, heritage and environment. chevalier’s design is composed of printed and hand-painted corals that are brought to life with fluorescent colors in a bid to highlight fragile ocean ecosystems.

the artistic installation takes the form of a canvas that wraps the lighthouse and transforms it into a ‘manifeste de couleur’ (color manifesto). to create the large scale piece, chevalier revisits the shape of coral through a digital prism. set against a deep blue background, massive branches of corals overlap to evoke an underwater reef.

‘coraux fractals 1’ stands as a vibrant beacon during the day and also at night thanks to UV spotlights that chevalier incorporated to bring out the fluorescent colors. the artistic coral reef becomes luminescent at night in a similar effect to bioluminescence, which is the production and emission of light by living organisms, an effect commonly found in marine animals from the deepest oceans, out of the reach of sunlight.

with this piece, the artist explores our relationship with the living, the visible, and the invisible. it addresses fragile coral ecosystems, which are some of the most threatened in the world while being home to a diversity that must be preserved. it seeks to recreate the conditions for symbiosis between humans and nature.

in parallel to this event, linda and guy pieters foundation presents an exhibition titled ‘corauxllages – miguel chevalier’. the artist presents more than thirty new artworks inspired by the marine universe and corals. using laser cutting technology and glued paper, chevalier evokes coral reefs, algae trees, and even blood vessels or neural networks. these very graphic and vividly colored collages also pay tribute to matisse’s ‘papiers collées’ (cut-outs). the exhibition is on view until august 29 and the lighthouse installation is on display. until november 4, 2021

digital artist miguel chevalier shares his latest installation, ‘oscillations 2020’, which has been unveiled in pittsburgh’s wood street galleries. on view until april 5, 2020, the work presents a new ‘generative virtual-reality’ that has been created to react to music composed by michel redolfi. as the images respond to the music, the result is a moving landscape of colorful graphics that absorb the viewer.

oscillations 2020 has been developed by chevalier with the use of generative software, which creates a waveform in real time according to the frequencies and amplitudes of the music by redolfi. these spectrums of the different sounds of music produce imaginary landscapes. these landscapes, which pass before the viewer’s eyes, present infinite variations: solid or wireframe, steep or flat, in black and white or in a spectrum of color.

best known as one of the pioneers of digital and virtual art, french digital artist miguel chevalier draws inspiration from art history, nature and artifice. for his latest endeavour, chevalier has taken over france’s rodez cathedral, creating a generative virtual reality installation that projects onto the structure’s central nave thirty different colored networks of light, combined with pictures of explosions of massive stars.

dubbed digital supernova, this installation by miguel chevalier is an immersive experience that blends art and science. to bring it to life, the artist has collaborated with astrophysicist fabio acero, a specialist in supernova remnant, who is developing his research at the AIM laboratory. thanks to this alliance, chevalier was able to combine his wired virtual worlds with a series of exclusive documents acero delivered to him.

inside the cathedral, large meshes of light take form and then lose their shape, creating ever-renewed, diversified universes. the composition elements are attracted and repelled by one another, creating a breathing-like rhythm of dilation and contraction. the installation also resonates with the architecture of the cathedral and highlights the volumes of the columns and warhead arches.

overall, digital supernova by miguel chevalier releases a radiant energy into space, opening onto the infinite and immersing visitors into the mysteries of the universe.

miguel chevalier‘s latest installation, entitled ‘pixels noir lumière’, is being exhibited at the soulages museum in the french city of rodez. on display until may 26, 2019, the work pays tribute to the artist and painter pierre soulages, whose 100th birthday will be commemorated on 24 december 2019. the exhibition presents two generative and interactive digital installations – ‘pixels liquides’ and ‘l’origine du monde’ – which both explore the use of light as an artistic material.

chevalier‘s ‘pixels liquides’ is an interactive installation projected onto a wall space of 13.40 x 7.80 meters. the work evokes the idea of being a large, moving painting, as shades of black and blue flow across the wall, becoming a sort of canvas as it creates large abstract paintings in real time. as visitors walk around the space, their movements become a ‘digital brush’ as the projections on the wall change with each passing gesture. the constantly changing piece blends art with human interaction, making for a truly immersive experience.

‘l’origine du monde’ is the second interactive installation at the exhibition, however, this work is projected onto a floor space of 12 x 7.50 meters. this piece is inspired by biology, micro-organisms and cellular automata. the installation presents different black and white virtual paintings composed of universes of cells that move as spectators walk across the floor. the organic patterns proliferate, divide and merge in a rhythm that changes from fast to slow. in addition to the cellular shapes taken from biology, the projections are also mixed with square pixels of black and white.

l’origine du monde, 2019

the superposition of different layers of images creates an intriguing optical illusion, and ultimately blends the basic building blocks of life with artificial pixels. similarly to ‘pixels noir lumière’, ‘l’origine du monde’ also reacts to the gestures of each visitor, engaging the visitor’s body and their movements. inspired by pierre soulages’ work ‘outrenoirs’ which captured the variation of light, the exhibition in essence aims to form ‘living experiences’ by exploring all potentialities of the work.
