Terracotta clean-eating venue in Athens by studiomateriality

Wild Souls is a clean-eating venue designed by studiomateriality and located at the corner of two busy streets in the Kolonaki district of Athens. Positioned within a dense urban context, the project integrates into the city’s daily movement while establishing a clear architectural identity at the street corner.

The exterior is fully clad in terracotta tiles, giving the building a consistent material presence on all visible facades. The use of terracotta introduces a warm, earthy surface that references natural materials and aligns with the plant-based focus of the food concept. The uniform treatment of the facade allows the store to remain visually legible from multiple directions within the surrounding streetscape.

Wild Souls’ Square Plan Organized Around Communal Dining

Inside, the design team at Athens-based studiomateriality organizes the layout around a clear square plan that promotes openness and visibility across the space. A large, centrally positioned tiled communal table anchors the ground floor and accommodates shared seating for up to ten people. This element structures circulation while supporting informal gathering and collective dining.

The upper level introduces a contrasting atmosphere through extensive use of greenery. Planting defines the seating area and creates a quieter environment removed from street activity below. This level functions as an interior retreat, offering a spatial shift through light, vegetation, and reduced visual density.

Consistent Materiality Shapes Wild Souls’ Interior Experience

Material choices remain consistent throughout the project. Terracotta surfaces, muted tones, and natural textures are paired with planting to establish a cohesive interior language. The design avoids excessive formal gestures, allowing materiality, proportion, and spatial organization to support the program. Wild Souls is conceived as a place for eating and social interaction, where architectural elements frame everyday use within one of Athens’ most active neighborhoods.

wild souls opens in athens’ oldest neighborhood

Greek architecture practice Studiomateriality completes a new store design dubbed Wild Souls in one of Athens‘ oldest neighborhoods, right along Voulis street. Inspired by the unprocessed, pure and plant-based food, vegetables, and nuts that the brand has to offer, the two-floor retail space catches the eye and feels truly eye-candy for one’s Instagram feed. Upon entering Wild Souls, visitors take in the monochromatic and terracotta-orange paint applied across the dropped ceiling, splashback, cabinetry, and kitchen island across the shop. Meanwhile, cactus plants decorate the shelves and color-block with the earthy surfaces.

studiomateriality uses simple aesthetics against vivid backdrop

The team at Studiomateriality focuses here on simple, aesthetic alterations that would give a fresh sense of the space without moving walls. Wild Souls consists of a narrow, vertical space that ends with a garden and both sides showcasing the freshly made products and snacks.  Across the store, a white marble-lous bar serves as a white canvas that highlights the healthy brunch and all-day dishes and meals: snacks made by nut butters, a great variety of vegan cheeses, superfood bowls, fresh-cut salads, delicious sandwiches along with coffee and wine are some of the signature culinary things that a customer can taste in Wild Souls. ‘The welcoming quote on the wall of the store is loud and clear. If you were born to eat wild, ‘Wild Souls’ is the right spot for your daily clean eating habits. And who knows? There is a chance to meet your -wild- soulmate,’ concludes Studiomateriality.

athens-based studiomateriality introduces ‘surfer maya’, a fast-casual restaurant in thessaloniki, greece. concept-wise, the team sought to create a classic american diner look and feel, applying tints of yellow, blue, bubble-pink, and red to add a refreshing and modern touch. graffiti writing finishes the glazed surfaces of the interior as well as a big part of the façade, inviting passersby to get in.graffiti fonts and neon signs characterize studiomateriality's 'surfer maya' restaurant in greeceall images courtesy of antonis sarris

in an attempt to generate a stronger connection to the street, studiomateriality utilized neon glow and large windows with yellow and pink frames to create an eye-catching façade. at the same time, the wooden counters act as an instant reminder of the restaurant’s more casual side. branding signs flood the place, while their mayan pop mask logo decorates the minimal, yet playful, food packaging.graffiti fonts and neon signs characterize studiomateriality's 'surfer maya' restaurant in greece

located in one of the busiest narrow streets of the city, studiomateriality has designed the ice-cream store as a vibrant pop of color refreshing anyone who comes across it. blue-colored walls contrasted with a yellow ceiling and bubble-pink doors are visible from the street-through arched doors that punctuate the front facade.

at ‘spoild’, along with their ice cream, customers can get an instagram picture with the professional jackhammer that features inside the store and also on its logo. ‘we wanted to merge the softness of an ice-cream with the hard work that the opening of an ice-cream store or a store in general needs nowadays – the swirl of the fresh cream with the swirl of the drill.’ adds miltos kontogiannis, owner and head designer of studiomateriality.

studiomateriality has designed a colorful and fun workspace for hairdresser stefania saraili, located in koridallos, athens. the design team has envisioned a modern doll house with bright dominant colors and eye-catching details that make it stand out.

‘our interior design acts like a a framework which enables all kinds of hairstyles, daring color choices and excited faces that occur by stefania’s talented personality…and hands.’ explains studiomateriality. the customer enters the hair salon through a ‘time-capsuled’ transparent double-door entrance with curved elements formed by adhesive tapes. this re-imagined entrance dramatizes the big reveal of the space which is separated, with the right side being dedicated to the hairdressers and the left side to the clients’ waiting benches.

bubble-gum pink, pine green, lemon yellow and black and white are the main colours of the interior. ‘color obsession’ is the mojo moto of stefania’s place and it welcomes you as it is written in the central wall of the salon, presenting a typical studiomateriality emblematic positioning.

metallic frames dipped in the pop pink shade frame the mirrors where the clients can look into while getting their hair transformation. in the right back side of the salon, a large yellow-tile wall incorporates the message ‘in this house we believe in color’ and in the left back side, open-shelves store the hair products efficiently. studiomateriality has envisioned an environment where hairdos are not just changes and transformations but a whole experience and treatment for the client’s soul and mood. the designers’ intentions and aesthetic approach is highlighted by the wassily kandinsky quote ‘color is a power which directly influences the soul’.

studiomateriality has developed cepolia, a renovation project created to host the facilities of phoenix distribution company. it is located in sepolia, a neighborhood north of the center of athens that is known for the increased industrial activity during the 1960s and later, specialized in clothing. during the last thirty years, this building has been the storage of the court of the audit.

a new backstory is written, highlighting the old industry activity of the area and re-connecting it with the new use of the building. studiomateriality unveils the raw character of this interesting shell. open plan design, gentle, minimum, only absolutely necessary interventions are being made following the simplest forms and combinations. old and new co-exists. wood and metal for the heavier structures, curtains, visual communication. all the details matter, all the materials being used are visible, even the electrical and ventilation network.

storage, a lounge with a garden, showrooms, and an administration office are spread through the floors, accompanied by ranks of clothes, shoes on top of cubes and various collections changing according to the SS and AW collection periods. two doors are marking the new-born building. the main one designed with a metal frame protrudes from the wall welcoming the visitors inside and the huge garage sliding door informs both visitors and passers-by about the definition of the word ‘door’.

studiomateriality has transformed a traditional bakery, located in central-west athens into a funky bakery, patisserie and coffee shop that would definitely lighten up your day. the design studio used bespoke light-boxes featuring happy faces and kitchen equipment, such as mixers, in order to convert the space into a contemporary and artsy environment.

accessible and simple materials are combined with references of the american pop culture in the interior of greek based studiomateriality‘s delicious ‘pink brown’ bakery. pink details on a wooden floor and a strong color palette on the wall artwork create a welcoming space where everything is mixed in the right proportion. the white walls point out smarty quotes addressed to customers revealing the design studio’s humor and aesthetics, allowing at the same time more light into the interior space.

studiomateriality’s approach has not been only about spatial design. practical and stylish bespoke staff uniforms, branded coffee cups and other supplies have shown that this project has been about exploring possibilities. ‘as in all our projects, we first try to think as a potential client. we wanted to create a joint morning experience for the customer, so that he would start the day in the most joyful way. we approach each of our projects with the intention of having fun. yet, we especially enjoyed this one, since we had to consider and combine the morning in-store traffic of a bakery with the openness of a coffee-shop and the elegance of a patisserie’, says interior and product designer miltos kontogiannis, owner of studiomateriality.

the fact that the ‘pink brown’ bakery has been located in an urban and busy area, contributed to the design’s identity. the aim is to create a happy note in a busy and industrialized neighborhood, hoping that the design studio would add ‘a pinch of brightness’ on the people’s day. whether you are thirsty or hungry, one thing is for sure: creating happiness is like baking a cake — you have to mix all the ingredients in the right proportion.
